Rhinoplasty Information

Rhinoplasty is a term that is often heard in this day and age. But many people don’t really know what rhinoplasty is and what is involved in rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is basically a type of surgery where the goal is to alter the shape of the nose or the function of the nose. This can be done for cosmetic or medical reasons. For example, someone may be dissatisfied with their nose if it is out of proportion to the rest of their face. Or if someone is experiencing an obstruction in their nasal passage they may want to undergo a rhinoplasty operation to help them breathe easier.

Whatever your reasons for being interested in rhinoplasty, it is a good idea to know how the surgery works, and what to expect after the surgery. There are two main types of rhinoplasty surgery. The first is open rhinoplasty surgery and the second is closed rhinoplasty surgery. Open rhinoplasty involves an incision between the nostrils, known as the columella. There are also incisions made on the inside of the nose. Open rhinoplasty allows for greater visibility and is often used in more complex cases. Closed rhinoplasty involves incisions only on the inside of the nose. There is usually much less swelling and bruising with closed rhinoplasty surgery, but depending on the changes to the nose that are being made this may not be a viable option. You should discuss all of your concerns with your doctor and he or she will explain which type of rhinoplasty surgery you will be undergoing and why the decision to go that route was made.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthetic. Once the rhinoplasty surgeon has finished the re-shaping of the nose, a splint is usually applied to help the nose keep its new shape. The splint is typically removed along with the stitches approximately one to two weeks after the rhinoplasty surgery. Nasal packs may also be used to help keep the septum properly in place. The septum is a piece of tissue that separates the two nasal passages. These nasal packs are usually removed a few days after the surgery. Your doctor will explain any follow up visits that you must make to his or her office and when you should make them.

You may be wondering if you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty surgery. If you are getting rhinoplasty for medical reasons your family doctor has likely recommended the procedure. If you are considering rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons you are probably dissatisfied with the shape and appearance of your nose. You should discuss your particular needs with a rhinoplasty surgeon to determine if the results you are looking for are attainable.

However this amount can skyrocket up to and over $13,000. The more experienced and well-known a particular rhinoplasty surgeon is, the more he or she is likely to charge for their services. How much a surgeon charges is not necessarily representative of the quality of work they provide.

If you do not have a family doctor, or if your doctor does not have any recommendations for a rhinoplasty surgeon, there are many other ways to find a qualified surgeon. Your city may have a directory of rhinoplasty plastic surgeons. You can contact several of these surgeons and make an appointment to discuss your needs and what you would like to have accomplished with the rhinoplasty operation.

A good way to limit your choices is to look for specific things when trying to find a rhinoplasty surgeon. If you are living in the United States, you should ensure that your rhinoplasty surgeon is an accredited member of the American Board of Plastic or the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Being accredited with the American Board of Plastic Surgery ensures that each surgeon that is a member has had special training in the area of plastic surgery. There are other qualifications that each member must meet before they can be a member. This is a great way to weed out rhinoplasty surgeons that may provide sub-standard care.

You should ask to see rhinoplasty before and after pictures done by each rhinoplasty surgeon before making a decision. If you don’t like the results that you are seeing, you should consider a different surgeon. You should be able to see a large variety so don’t be satisfied with just one or two pictures.

When you are getting rhinoplasty surgery, you want the best job done that is possible. You should consider surgeons that have rhinoplasty as the primary part of their practice rather than one that does a variety of different types of plastic surgery. The more experience a surgeon has doing rhinoplasty the better equipped they will be to give you the results you are looking for.

Finding the best rhinoplasty surgeon for your specific needs may take some time and research, but it is well worth it. Be sure that the surgeon you choose to perform your rhinoplasty operation is not only accredited, but that you feel comfortable with him or her as well.
